Summer fun in Bowness

Annual Lions Club Bowness Stampede Parade

For better or worse, some of us can’t escape the ’hood for a summer holiday. Whether cash strapped, work obligated or whatever, our summer sojourns are not so much sipping cervezas on a houseboat off the Shuswap. More like a 7-11 slurpee and a sweet swan dive from the Bowmont train bridge. (Actually feet first is best, take my word on it.) Read more…

Meet your Bowness Community Association directors (left to right), back row: Derek Podlubny, Michelle Dice, Scott Penny; front row: Linda Flanagan, Carla Betzner, Niki Smyth, Merrit Penny

I HOPE YOU’RE ENJOYING the inaugural issue of the new Bowest’ner. We’ve missed our community newsletter over the past months; it really added to the uniqueness of Bowness. We’ve tried getting a blog going on our website, www.mybowness.com, but it hasn’t been met with the enthusiasm the newsletter’s always received. So in the firm belief this community needs a strong, steady voice we’ve ventured to publish it ourselves. Read more…

Saturday, July 10
Breakfast: 7–11 am, Parade: 9 am

IT HAS BEEN SAID that half of Bowness comes out every year to see the community’s annual Stampede parade. The other half of Bowness is in it.

Without a doubt, one of the real highlights of the Bowness social calendar is the Lions Club Stampede Parade & Breakfast. For 21 years now the Lions, in co-operation with dozens of local businesses and merchants, have been throwing what has become the single best attended community event in the 99-year history of Bowness. Sunday, July 18, noon–6 pm

THE NEWEST KID ON THE BLOCK—if events were kids and your cultural calendar were a block—is the 2nd Annual Bownesians Picnic, Sunday, July 18, at Baker Park, just across the river from Bowness Park.

The Bownesians’ Picnic is a free family event with hours and hours of live music and all the games and activities the City of Calgary’s Community & Neighbourhood Services crew can muster. Food is generously donated by the Bowness Community Association and barbecued by the hard-working Lions Club. Cash donations for burgers and hot dogs go to the Bowness Boys and Girls Club. You’ll want to pack your own lunch; food is limited. Read more…
