Main Street makeover

The Bowness Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) has been hard at work for the past year setting the stage for streetscape/urban design improvements that were envisioned through the 1997 Bowness Area Redevelopment Plan.

The design concept is to create a pedestrian-friendly environment that encourages people to park, walk and shop along Bowness Road between 62 St. and 65 St. NW. For those of you not familiar with urban design improvements, we are looking at wider sidewalks, more benches, garbage enclosures, improved crosswalks and generally more street activity. Examples of this in Calgary include 1st SW between 12 Ave. and 14 Ave. SW.

It is interesting to note that while this work was committed to in 1997 by the City’s Planning department, it took the BRZ a year to get the City to commit resources to prepare the actual design. City staff will be starting this work in August and we will be requesting your input upon completion of the design drawings. The BRZ will also be establishing a link through its new website for your perusal.

If you are interested in this project please contact Martin Halliday, Bowness BRZ Director, at 430-270-5933.
